How webcam scanning works
When you allow camera access, your browser hands this page a live video stream. Each frame is examined for the three large square finder patterns that mark the corners of every QR code. Once those are located, the grid between them is read, the error-correction data is used to repair any unreadable modules, and the result is turned back into text — a link, a WiFi credential, a phone number, or whatever was encoded.
All of that happens inside the browser tab on your own machine. The video never reaches a server, which is why scanning stays fast and why nothing is left behind after you close the page.
Getting a clean read
- Distance matters more than resolution. Roughly 10–30 cm is the sweet spot; too close and the camera cannot focus.
- Kill the glare. Angle the code slightly away from overhead lights and screens.
- Fill the frame, but not entirely. Leave a small margin of background — the quiet zone around a code is part of how it is detected.
- Hold still. Most failed scans are motion blur, not a damaged code.
- Prefer the rear camera on phones. Front-facing cameras are usually lower resolution and focus poorly up close.

Do I need to install an app to scan with my webcam?

No. The scanner runs entirely in your browser using the standard camera API. There is nothing to download, no account to create, and it works the same on a laptop webcam or a phone camera.
Why won't my camera turn on?

Two things are required: an HTTPS connection and camera permission. Browsers block camera access on plain HTTP entirely. If the page is on HTTPS and the camera still won't start, check the camera icon in your browser's address bar and make sure this site isn't set to Blocked, then reload.
The camera is on but nothing gets detected. What now?

Hold the code roughly 10–30 cm from the lens, keep it steady long enough for the camera to focus, and make sure the whole code is in frame with even lighting. Glare from a screen or a laminated surface is a common cause. If it still won't lock on, take a photo of the code and use the image scanner instead.
Can I use a different camera, like an external webcam?

Yes. If your device exposes more than one camera, you can switch between them from the scanner controls. On phones this lets you choose the rear camera, which usually focuses better on close-up codes than the front-facing one.
Is webcam scanning private?

Yes. The video stream is processed on your device and never leaves it. No frames are uploaded, no images are stored, and the camera stops as soon as you leave or close the page.
Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, decoding itself needs no network connection, because it happens locally. You will only need a connection again to open whatever link the QR code contains.
